I see it's forbidden, could you define it? I know different forums think of trolling in different ways.

I see it's forbidden, could you define it? I know different forums think of trolling in different ways. That's true. When I wrote the rules I did originally have some definitions and examples, but I decided in the end to keep it simple and not define it. The reason being that the term trolling generally means deliberately messing with people and / or the forum itself, and regardless of how that's defined exactly, it all comes down to judging whether the person is doing something on purpose, or if their actions have a negative effect, or both. And that, in my opinion, doesn't require definitions, rather a judgement call. And let's face it, a troll can always stay within the rules and still cause trouble. But if at any time I feel that it would be best to elaborate on what it means, I'll certainly reconsider.

I was an admin/mod at The Few Good Men wargame/ military discussion forum for 4 years and it ran smooth as silk because we soon booted out trolls and dickheads. Then the Big Boss went bananas and decided to start letting them in earlier this year, and the previous good atmosphere went up the spout so i walked out. More recently i left the Armageddon, Amkon and Randi forums for the same reason. they're like noisy kids schoolyards. At the moment i hang at Ickes, but am thinking of leaving there too.
PS- I see there's an 'Alcatraz' section "where severely disruptive members are sent" None of my business but i'd just boot 'em off the site permanently and good riddance! You'll never attract decent sensible members unless you have a ZERO tolerance policy to disrupters.

A zero tolerance approach to trolls could backfire. At the moment I'm thinking that it may be best, at least for the time being, to contain them rather than ban them. The last thing I want to be doing is chasing sockpuppets.

Ambrose,
WWGHA's "Emergency Room" has had a nice overall success rate when it comes to disruptive members.
Rather than the banhammer crashing down, the unruly member is temporarily restricted to the ER where members can address the unwanted behavior. If it's properly handled then posting privileges are restored. If not, then the result is a temporary ban for some offline self reflection.
Whether it be stonewalling, continuously failing to use the quote function, sockpuppeting- you name it, it's been fixed there.

Alcatraz sounds good. Will they be able to view other boards? And will others be able to view them and post in alcatraz?

I've been on forums where some people cleverly stay within the rules, but everyone can see that they're trolling. So I don't see the point in going into detail as to what constitutes trolling. It's best to judge each situation on its merits, and if someone's conduct is considered deliberately disruptive, they're a troll. It really pisses me off when people enter into discussions with trolls about their behaviour, it only gets them off even more. Just get rid of them I say.

If you can keep trolls out then this could help the forum be a success. So that when Ambrose gets asked "what is unique about this forum?" one answer is "no trolls."

An absence of trolls, on an internet forum, is about as likely as the Christian God.

Trolling is a term used by those who cannot cope with rational and logical response to their outrageous comments. Those on the right of the political spectrum use the term most often for it is their crazy beliefs thats are so easily exposed for what they are.
Being labled as a TROLL is in most ways a badge of honour. Only a person who disagrees with free speech and free exprssion would tag someone a troll.

Yukon, this isn't about left or right, it's about being disruptive and having no aim but to annoy. Now if you have some wonderfully outrageous concepts that you would like to enlighten us all with, let's hear it. Are you a racist? Great, good for you. Radical. Why don't you start a thread somehwre and tell us all about your racists views. If we disagree we'll let you know. Just don't call us trolls if we do though.

You ask if Im racist. What if I am? You ask me to start a Thread about my racist views and if I do the MessageStapo will ban me. You people are pathetic. You dont believe in free speech and/or free expression you simply pay it "lip service". Yukon, this isn't about left or right, it's about being disruptive and having no aim but to annoy.
