Having the belief that if something doesn't kill you it makes you stronger is very beneficial. It's positive and optimistic. People who have that belief generally do better and cope with things better than those who try to be "realistic". Yes, you have to be realistic, but you should also be positive.

Do people really get to choose their beliefs? All the evidence I have seen suggests that things which could kill you, but don't, make you significantly weaker and more likely to succumb to later events.
I think behaving as if I believed this would cause me to act in a foolhardy manner that would make unpleasant things more likely to happen to me.
